Safety

Mō ngā awa te aroha, he waiaroha — For the love of rivers

Whitewater NZ works to keep paddling safe and enjoyable. We:

  • Provide independent safety advice
  • Maintain the national incident database
  • Maintain the national river grading system
  • Publish and promote the safety code
  • Maintain river safety and rescue syllabi, and approve course providers

Report an incident

If you have been involved in or witnessed an incident on the river, tell us. Rescues, injuries, near misses, problems with other water users, pollution or health concerns, and major accidents all help us advise paddlers and improve safety for everyone.

Reports feed the national incident database. Where there are lessons for others, we share them, in a de-identified form, with the paddling community.
