DOC grants concession for Kaituna Dam

16 December: In what appears to be a cave-in to political pressure, DOC has granted a concession to Bay Of Plenty Electricity for use of conservation estate for a hydro scheme on the Kaituna River. A resource consent application is now expected. The project will destroy the recreational amenity in the Awesome Gorge and Gnarly Gorge sections. Update 19 December: Apparently DOC has given approval ‘in principle’ only and will be seeking public submissions in January.
