Algal blooms on Mararoa and Waiau rivers

Richard Bannister advises that Southland’s Mararoa and Waiau rivers have algal blooms, so kayakers are advised not to paddle them to avoid spreading the algae to other rivers, or ensure any equipment used is well cleaned (wash items that have been in contact with affected waters with nappy cleaner, salt water, 10% bleach solution, disinfectant skin cleanser such as hibitane, or strong detergent).
